Food Not Bombs
Because Food is a Right, Not a Privilege
Over the last 25 years thousands of people in Food Not Bombs chapters across the U.S. have been arrested and even beaten for serving free food. Why? Because too many communities want to solve their "homeless problem" by driving homeless, poor, and hungry people away from public spaces. Homelessness and poverty are indeed huge problems in this wealthy country but they are not problems that can be solved by being criminalized or ignored.
Right here in Greensboro hundreds of thousands of dollars go to downtown revitalization, neighborhood beautification, tax incentives for wealthy corporations and new shopping malls, but our city lacks even barely adequate services for its poorest citizens. We need more and better shelters, we need a voice in the way shelters and services are run, we need a day shelter where men and women can do simple things like take a shower or use the phone. When will we start paying attention to everyone's needs, not just the wants of our wealthiest and most influential neighbors?
