About
The Greensboro Community Arts Collective wants to bring Greensboro a space dedicated to initiating and supporting art and culture-based engagement with issues of racism and oppression. We believe that a better Greensboro is possible and we have committed our creativity, energy and art to that process. There are many cultural and arts organizations in Greensboro. There are also many groups with a political focus so here's a word on how we use those terms and combine those ideas.
Culture is often thought of as something that is received, like "pop" culture, the culture you find in a museum or at an opera house. But there's more to culture. Culture is in the kitchen, in the garage and in the closet. Culture is in our speech, our daily activities, and in how we interact with others. Culture is the power of the people because culture is what people are doing all the time. So our focus on culture is a way of asserting everyone's importance in shaping the world. That is why the GCAC has a lot more going on than just art.
Still, we are ourselves artists: sculptors, painters, poets, actors, writers, instrument makers and musicians. Naturally, we have a strong sense of art's power: It can bring people together; It can raise important issues; It can be a forum for imagining solutions. So in addition to working towards a culture of awareness and struggle with important issues, we seek to create and support artistic thought that is courageous and demanding, art that not only reflects life, but also takes part in its challenges.
